On the night before Jesus went to the cross Matthew 26:36 tells us, “Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane.” In Luke’s Gospel he says, “Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives.”
Because he was writing to a Gentile audience, Luke used the more common Gentile name for the garden area of Gethsemane. But more importantly, Luke tells us that this was normal for Jesus. It was not the first time he had prayed in that garden. It was something Jesus did many times before the now-famous garden scene when He sweat blood before His arrest.
We know why He went to pray that night, but why did Jesus go there all the other times? Could it be that prayer is just as important on the good days as the bad? Does your normal daily routine include prayer? Jesus’ did and yours should too.
